Top 10 Best Flying Type Pokemon

The Top Ten
1 Staraptor Staraptor, known in Japan as Mukuhawk, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Staraptor is amazing, and I quote Ash himself, "Staraptor is my best friend, and I wouldn't trade him for all the Pokémon in the world." Plus, the fact that it looks like a boss with its hairstyles.

All this dude needs is a mega evolution with Contrary and a boost to his speed to 120. Close Combat with Contrary solves the frail problem. You can almost hear the triggered Talonflame fans.

Close Combat equals dead rock and ice types. Oh no, its defense dropped... its defense sucks anyways, and it outspeeds most other Pokémon (especially most rock types). Actually, it's pretty much dead against anything because of its high attack stat, as long as it's at least normally effective.

2 Rayquaza Rayquaza (pronounced "ray-quay-zah") is a Dragon/Flying type Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. It serves as the mascot in the game Pokémon Emerald. Rayquaza can mega evolve into Mega Rayquaza provided that it does not have a Z-Crystal and it knows the move... read more

This is crazy. Rayquaza is actually the most powerful Pokemon. Why is Staraptor first? Plus, Rayquaza is part Dragon type with a Mega Evolution. Rayquaza seems like the best Pokemon ever.

Why isn't it in #1?! It has the highest base stat of all Pokémon, access to one of the best flying-type moves in Dragon Ascent, AND can mega evolve! How is this not in #1?!

Because of this Pokémon's ability in its Mega form, it is no longer 4x weak to anything and its only 2x weaknesses are Dragon, Ice, and Fairy. It has the same stat total as Mega Mewtwo, except that this Pokémon doesn't need a Mega Stone to Mega Evolve, which means it can still hold another item to further boost its stats. Mega Rayquaza is the best Pokémon in the game, which also means that it is the best flying type.

3 Salamence Salamence, known in Japan as Bohmander, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Alright, with Legendaries excluded (because of Mega Rayquaza), Salamence is easily the best Flying-Type. He is one of two Pseudo-Legendaries to ever be relegated to Ubers, the other being Garchomp at the beginning of Gen 4. With that aside, Salamence was good on its own, right? High speed, high Special Attack and Attack, decent bulk. But then Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire comes along and makes this Pokémon broken. It got a Mega Evolution which gives a substantial boost to all stats, but here's the most broken part about this Pokémon: it got Aerilate. For those of you that don't know, Aerilate changes any Normal-type move into a Flying-type move. That doesn't sound big, but Flying-type STAB is what was holding this Pokémon back before. But now he has a Flying-Type Double Edge. The only moves you'll ever need on this Pokémon are Double Edge, Earthquake, and Roost. Dragon STAB isn't even needed anymore.

4 Charizard Charizard, known in Japan as Lizardon, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. Created by Ken Sugimori, Charizard first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue and subsequent sequels. They have later appeared in various merchandise, spinoff titles and animated... read more

This Pokemon is one of the only two who have more than one Mega Evolution forms, with the other being Mewtwo. Its special attack is insane, and its speed isn't bad either. Its design is an epic fire dragon. What's not to love?

This Pokémon is a monster if it becomes Mega Charizard Y. It has Drought, which allows it to use Solar Beam. It also halves the damage of water moves and kills the water type with Solar Beam. It has an insane special attack of 157, more than Mewtwo. But be careful with rocks and Stealth Rock. I recommend a rapid spinner to wipe out Stealth Rock.

5 Dragonite Dragonite, known in Japan as Kairyu, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

When I went through Pokemon Silver/Soul Silver, I used him. And he was just a wall. Nothing destroyed it except for Ice types. But if you just teach it Flamethrower, it knocks them out easily.

He is a monster! There is no dragon type better than him. Plus, he's a tank! Charizard doesn't stand a chance against him, as shown in the anime!

This Pokémon is the strongest Pokémon in my list. It is a superb Pokémon in the world. I love this Pokémon because its speed is more than a bullet train.

6 Crobat

Almost guaranteed first strike. Confuse Ray + Poison Fang until badly poisoned. Then switch with a resistant Pokemon, and the match is yours. Give it a King's Rock to make the opponent flinch, and you've got a winning formula.

Really? I mean, Crobat has Flying type attacks, and you can even mix it with Poison type attacks. And he is 8th on the list, what? Not to mention that he possesses superb speed, which renders all his enemies up.

Having played loads of Pokemon, I only started using Crobat recently, and man, Confuse Ray, Mean Look, and Poison Fang can destroy Pokemon, especially if you swap out to a tank. Plus, it has god-like speed.

7 Lugia Lugia, known in Japan as ルギア (Rugia), is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. First introduced in Generation II, it's the mascot of the game Pokémon Silver. It serves as the master of the legendary birds trio, and is part of the tower tuo along with Ho-Oh... read more

It is the lord of the sea, which covers over two-thirds of the world. If it wants, it can just flood the world and kill everyone. Surely that's better than Staraptor?

Being one of the strongest flying types ever is awesome, not to mention its intelligence, speed, and being the leader of the three legendary birds to be considered...

Lugia is good competitively, having access to moves like Calm Mind and Extrasensory. Good legendary and Pokemon overall.

8 Talonflame Talonflame is a dual-type Fire/Flying Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon franchise's sixth generation. It evolves from Fletchinder and is known for its swift and graceful flight. Talonflame's signature move, Brave Bird, showcases its daring and fearless nature in battles. Its fiery plumage and aerial... read more

Talonflame is so awesome! It's got Me First, so you can use whatever move your opponent is going to use, and first! It's also got Fly, which is awesome, and it is like my #3 best Pokémon on my team, besides Flame (Delphox) and Vines (Venusaur). It also looks really cool too!

The best bird Pokemon, in my opinion. Gale Wings is just so awesome, allowing it to outspeed any non-priority move, and it also gets priority with Brave Bird and even Roost! The only flaw I see is the lack of bulk and a 4x Rock weakness.

Talonflame sweeps nearly every single Pokémon in competitive battle because of Gale Wings. The only flaw of Talonflame is that it gets destroyed by Stealth Rock, just like Charizard.

9 Gyarados Gyarados is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. It evolves from one of the weakest Pokemon, Magikarp. But Gyarados has a high attack power (as of gen VII, mega Gyarados is ranking #19 for highest attack stat & would rank #10 if legendary Pokemon aren't included), and... read more

Its attack stat is really good but becomes even better when it mega evolves. I also love how Magikarp, the weakest Pokémon ever, evolves into this raging water snake/dragon.

Too bad about the quadruple weakness to Electric.

Nice Gyarados you got there. It would be a shame if I used Thunderbolt.

Jk, this thing is one heck of a beast. Just teach it Earthquake and have it punish the stupid Pikachu that tried Thunderbolt on it (and failed miserably).

10 Aerodactyl Aerodactyl, known in Japan as Ptera, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Why is it number 1? The comments say, "He's just awesome." Please, that is not a reason. "It's got mega evolution, is sort of resistant to rock and electric attacks, and it is very awesome." It is not the only Pokémon that can mega evolve, and some non-mega evolved Pokémon are better than the ones that mega evolve. It is weak to rock and electric, and you need to prove it is awesome.

@person who said "why is it number 1...", I can prove why Aerodactyl is so good. This Pokémon is fast. Even though it's weak to rock, steel, water, electric, and ice, with Earthquake, Iron Head, Thunder Fang, and Rock Slide, it'll crush almost all resistance. Among the other rock types, I think only Rhyperior can knock this guy down (and I say Rhyperior only because of its Solid Rock ability).

The Contenders
11 Ho-Oh Ho-Oh, known in Japan as Houou, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

The ultimate bird Pokemon! My personal favourite, with his legendary stats and access to Sacred Fire, it deserves to be much higher on this list.

Ho-Oh is one of the most powerful Pokemon and the most powerful bird type Pokemon. It deserves No. 1.

In my opinion, this guy is pretty first-rate. He should be at least in the teens, not at No. 20.

12 Yveltal Yveltal is a fictional creature in the Pokemon Franchise. Introduced in the 6th gen, Yveltal is a legendary Dark/Flying type Pokemon, and is the mascot of Pokemon Y. It is classified as the Destruction Pokemon. Yveltal has the ability to absorb life energy, and when its life comes to an end, it steals... read more

Its design is amazing, it's a legendary, and it can beat most of the other Pokemon on this list. What's not to love?

The god of destruction is 28 while one of the weak regional birds is at 1 (Staraptor). Don't forget that Pidgeot is 11.

Yveltal has amazing stats and an awesome design. Why the hell is Staraptor first? I get that it knows Close Combat, but it is ahead of ALL these legendaries!

13 Hawlucha Hawlucha, known in Japan as Luchabull, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Hawlucha is very strong. As long as it survives one hit with Unburden, using a Sitrus Berry, and Swords Dance, it can sweep most of your team.

Hawlucha can just sweep with Unburden and Swords Dance.

The fact that it has Flying Press makes it amazing.

14 Drifblim

Now let me explain why having Drifblim instead of Staraptor is a better choice for your team. First of all, Staraptor may have speed, but its move pool takes forever to consistently be good. It's also hard for Staraptor to face the Elite Four, which is an even greater pitfall. Drifblim, however, has a pretty good matchup with any other Pokemon trainer and gym leader out there.

Why does everyone keep forgetting this one? It's just so cool! A unique Ghost/Flying typing, stats that, while not tournament worthy, can still get the job done, and a great concept. Drifblim deserves more attention.

15 Togekiss

Oh my God. It's so hard to explain how amazing Togekiss is, because there are so many great things about it. It's a Fairy type, and we already know if you train them right, Fairy types are OP to the max. Then, Togekiss is also the evolution of our main man Togepi, A.K.A. that Pokemon we all love. And don't even get me started on Paraflinch. There's also Togekiss's great design! And those are only a few great things I can name about Togekiss. It's just so strong and lovable! In short, out of all the flying types, Togekiss is and will always be my #1.

Ladies and gentlemen, I thank you.

16 Gliscor Gliscor, known in Japan as Glion, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Gliscor, the Fang Scorpion Pokémon, and the evolved form of Gligar. Gliscor hangs upside down from trees, watching for its chance to attack. At the right moment, it silently swoops, with its tail ready to seize its opponent.

It is as silent as a hunting orca.

Not to mention Poison Heal + Toxic Orb, access to Roost, and Facade boosted by status effects, in this case, poisoned. Also, it's Substitute compatible. Unless you're OHKO'd, then you'll be stalling however long you want. I wouldn't go into battle without one.

17 Noivern Noivern, known in Japan as Onvern, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Noivern is, without a doubt, one of my most favorite Pokemon. Not only can it use Boomburst, which is extremely powerful, but it can also use Supersonic to detect things or help people not to get lost in places.

18 Pidgeot

It's a flying type, so it should be in the top five. There weren't too many good bird Pokémon (excluding legendary birds) in the first generation to choose from other than Pidgey-Pidgeotto-Pidgeot. I'm sure 8/10 used Pidgeot as their flying-type Pokémon. I most certainly did. Has good moves too. Excellent attack and speed stats. Looks really cool too.

It's literally bird Jesus. It has 100% accurate hurricanes when mega, as well as heat wave. The only reason it doesn't have Focus Blast (which is why it's not in OU) is because it would make it the ultimate bird of all. Its design is awesome, and it just happens to be my all-time favorite Pokémon. It is truly bird Jesus.

19 Braviary Braviary, known in Japan as Warrgle, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Why, people, why? Why did you not put him on the list?

He is America the Pokémon. He owns the face of every other Pokémon on this list (well, maybe not Salamence and Dragonite, but come on, people, they're pseudo-legendaries). With Brave Bird, Super Power, Crush Claw, and Aerial Ace, he totally owns. Plus, in White and Black 2, you can find one with the hidden ability Defiant.

I got a Braviary with Defiant, and it owns. Defiant means that whenever one of his stats is lowered, his Attack raises by two stages. Intimidate? Yeah, thanks for the Attack boost. I used him to own Clay's Gym, including his Excadrill, who just couldn't hack it and missed with Rock Slide all the time.

Anyway, get a Braviary. Now.

20 Zapdos Zapdos, known in Japan as Thunder, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

It's an electric and flying type. It is its own weakness. Therefore, it has none.

This guy can live through an ice type attack, and it has like 100 speed.

Good Electric/Flying Pokemon. Took out the Pokemon Red League basically single-handedly.

21 Articuno Articuno, known in Japan as Freezer, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.
22 Altaria Altaria, known in Japan as Tyltalis, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Altaria is a beast and levels up quickly, due to its erratic experience rate.

I vote for Altaria because it's one of my Pokémon, and it's really strong! From Altaria, Heliolisk, Starmie, and Scizor, I think Starmie and Altaria are some of my strongest Pokémon.

The reason it's Dragon/Flying is because it's based on a Chinese legendary creature.

23 Swablu Swablu, known in Japan as Tyltto, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.
24 Scyther

No love for Scyther? It has a base stat of 500, great attack, decent defense, and special defense. There's not a lot of move type variety, though it has good moves. It's a shame about the quadruple weakness to Rock.

Cool Pokemon, but I think Scizor could be better. But they also have the same stats... so it does not really matter.

He should be number one because he can eventually evolve into Scizor, and also because he has False Swipe.

25 Rowlet Rowlet, known in Japan as Mokuroh, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

You spin me right round, Abby, right round, like a... On YouTube, search up spinning Rowlet but every time it loops it gets darker. It's funny, and that's why Rowlet is cool. Because it's a meme.

Rowlet is adorable, and when it evolves, it becomes a ghost and flying type.
